Poltergeist – Dragon Warrior monsters – 11/40
When I was a kid, in two parts.
Part the first: I was convinced that the Dragon Warrior Ghosts were the spirits of wizards. Why else would they were those hats? Being wizard ghosts, all of them could cast spells. The Poltergeist seen here can cast Hurt. That the Ghost never seemed to meant nothing to me. I was convinced that the Ghost was capable of casting some terrible as-yet unseen spell capable of terrible devastation. In the manner of 11-year old Nintendo players, I eagerly bought into this fantasy and spread it to my equally gullible friends (I suppose it’s possible that I, too, heard the rumor this way in the first place). I was certain that one day I’d be wandering through the early portions of the game and some lucky Ghost would chant his über spell and that would be the end for me.
Part the second: My favorite show around the time of this game was Unsolved Mysteries and my favorite episodes of Unsolved Mysteries were those about spirits, ghosts, and other apparitions. This was how I knew that poltergeists, above all other ghosts, were the most frightening and deadly. The reenactments of poltergeist hauntings scared me more than anything else I can remember on popular media. Even at the time, I never really believed in them, but ghosts stories remain among my favorite forms of entertainment.
