Knight – Dragon Warrior monsters – 25/40
I’m repeatedly amazed when it comes time to write these little posts about the most recent monster I’ve completed just how much of Dragon Warrior I remember. Were I instead doing this project on the creatures of Final Fantasy I’d have conspicuously less to talk about here. In fact, despite the fact that I have since played through Final Fantasy on one of its many remakes, I only have lasting memories of a good half-dozen monsters and/or events. This is not to say that I find one game series to be necessarily better than the other, only that Dragon Warrior made a much more substantial mark on my childhood memories.
I bring this up because in looking at this completed Knight I recall very distinctly that I always had the impression that this was not a person in armor but an animated suit of armor — an empty shell brought to a simulacrum of life by the Dragonlord in effort to further his dark desires. Later games in the series — particularly after the move to 3D graphics — would prove this to be be 100% true. The Armors of Dragon Quest VIII collapse into a heap of plate on their demise. I’m fairly certain this fact was never discussed in any manual and I know the game itself has nothing in the way of descriptive monster text. Somehow I could just tell from the sprite.
The Knight turned out rather well. The darker blue is not right, but this is the fault of the program I used to discover the colors and once started I decided to keep this particular set consistent even if not true to the game. These guys — like most monsters there are a few more of him — remind me very much of Mega Man villains.
These came out fantastic! Thanks for the tutorial on turning sprites into xstitch patterns. I’m gathering graphics to do the very same thing.
Look forward to seeing your future projects!
