Dragonlord – Dragon Warrior monsters – 39/40
You’ve collected all of Erdrick’s legendary items. You’ve crossed a rainbow bridge. You’ve slain countless beasts, monsters, and other unsavory types. You’ve made it to the epic battle with… a tiny blue man.
Well, okay, he doesn’t look that silly in the context of the rest of the art. Certainly not as goofball as an illustrated version that is almost certainly from the Japanese version of the game. In one of the comic book runs he looks pretty bad ass. Honestly, I never felt that he was a letdown. I’d seen He-Man, I’d read plenty of fantasy novels, I knew that the biggest bad guy was typically physically weak but made up for that defect with strength of mind.
(So, this is all part of the aspirational nature of fantasy literature. The heroes are all beefy types, honorable but not necessarily bright. The villains are weak, but smart, much like the readers. The reader identifies and aspires to be like the hero, a jock, while hating himself for being weak and unpopular.)
So anyway, here he is. The Dragonlord. Scourge of Alefgard and thief of light. Only one more monster remains: the Dragonlord in his true form. It’s much more impressive.
