Dragonlord (final form) – Dragon Warrior monsters – 40/40
In what could be described as a “Holy shit!” moment—had I been the type to swear in 1989—the battle with Dragonlord does not end with a little blue man. Not by a mile. Seemingly defeated, the Dragonlord reveals his true form and boy is it big! This guy won’t even fit inside the space allotted for monsters. His claw actually stretches down into the text box that contains such pith as “Courage and wit have served thee well!”
This would later become a trope in video games of all stripes, but particularly in the RPG. If a boss didn’t transform into some grotesque monstrosity he must not be a real boss. Hell, it might have been a trope in 1989, but I wasn’t yet aware of it. This guy really knocked my socks off.
The Dragonlord seen here really is pretty damned big. He’s at least twice the size of every other monster in the game. I had to buy an extra piece of fabric to finish him.
In the first game he’s a blue dragon, but when they went back and revamped the series for the Super Famicom they changed him to a more purple hue. None of the other beasts were significantly changed in this re-imagining. I guess someone liked him to be a bit redder.
So this is the end. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to take me over a year to finish this project. Each one is so small, so simple. I had imagined more of a ten to eleven month cycle. Yet there’s only so much time I can set aside, and I did manage to get plenty more things done in the meantime.
I hope you enjoyed looking at these as much as I enjoyed making them for you. I don’t think I’ll soon take on an undertaking with so many pieces. Come on back to see what I end up doing with all of these.
Very, very nice. You can definitely make out all of the fine details on this one. I like!
