Lucky Lucy's Prize Plums

Recently I participated in a swap with the Flickr group Phat Quarter. The theme was “anatomy” and participants were expected to create anything that fell within the theme, however tangentially. I wanted to do something slightly dirty and as the NES is kind of my thing I thought I might make a slightly dirty NES image.

Slightly dirty? NES?

Yes indeed. While Nintendo has deservedly been long associated with clean, family-friendly games there have been a few notable exceptions. The Big N kept a pretty tight lock on the games released for their systems, particularly the early ones, by controlling the means of production. You want to make a NES cart? You go through Nintendo. Yet there were those that circumvented the system.

Many were innocuous, though not without legal dispute, but a Taiwanese company called Panesian released three “adult” games for the NES: Peek-A-Boo Poker (a strip poker game), Bubble Bath Babes (a variant on the falling block puzzle game), and Hot Slot (a slot machine game). Lucky Lucy here comes from Hot Slot.

The games themselves weren’t particularly special but they actually worked, which is more than can be said for plenty of other shovelware. You can play them, and they don’t crash, nor are they terribly unbalanced. I’ve read that even the puzzle game Bubble Bath Babes is reasonably competent in execution. Faint praise perhaps, but given the subject matter it’s worth mentioning.

Aside from the pixelated boobies, the best part of the Panesian games is the batshit crazy English translations. Hot Slot had the best/worst of the bunch mostly because it had more text than the other two games. As you rack up big virtual bucks on the slot machine you are rewarded with one of three scenes of your chosen girl (there are three to pick from) in various states of undress.
